An update, Richard. My daughter just worked her ass off for six months and bought herself an ultralight HP, one with pretty swirls on the cover, no CD drive or hard drive. But she took my example to heart, and bought a USB drive to go with it, and loaded the USB drive with Portable Apps and uses that as her software source. She's happy as a clam. I've been watching her for a week, and thinking that for the $600 (Canadian remember!), I might just have to get one myself. It will be worth it to have something to bang out manuscript on when I'm on deadline and have to attend conferences at the same time -- I have four of the buggers in the next 12 months (conferences, that is). So you may just have converted me after all.

I'm also going to post about this on Anchored Authors.

Damn you, Richard.

Cheers,

@greg; thanks for the comment, i'd love a 1000 variant of the eeepc, mine is one of the very early and low power versions, it does the job but i'd like a bit more muscle it has to be said. and agreed zoho is a real good competitor to google.

Nice post :-) I ditched my iMac for a Eee PC 1000 running Linux. I am an author and screenwriter and, like yourself, think that lightweight machines using Web 2.0 services are a great way to work.

I use Backpack, although Scrybe (iScrybe.com) looks great and I can't wait to try it when the beta testing opens for new members.

Zoho.com is also a great alternative if you aren't up for total Google-ization of your Web 2.0 world.

Nice equipment - I'm totally going with my XPS 1330 there ;) It's technically not one of the 'mini' laptops, but with a 13' LED screen and a 9 cell battery it's ultra-portable and I have another battery for backup.

By the way, you just reminded me that I need to get myself another flash drive, because my 512MB stick really isn't in all that great shape anymore. Just to make double and triple sure, all my writing is also backed up on two other external hard drives as well as my blog and work computer. Never can be too paranoid, right?

O the joys of EeePC. I always write better when I'm travelling. It takes the pressure off somehow, as if I'm just pissing around while I wait for the first Bloody Mary to arrive on the plane.

Dude,

You know I love my mobile blogging (Glastonbury being a fine example) but this is different.. Not blogging, writing right?

You *know* I'm blatantly going to tell you to try SpinVox aren't you?

Come on!

;)

I use it every now and then for making notes to myself etc... Good for recording thoughts or capturing inspiring quotes. That's what I use it for anyway.

And thanks for pulling me in from Twitter - you're now in my RSS!
