Operation Concrete

special warfare insignia

This is a new form of weekly post that I plan on doing. I've got a couple of others which will be coming through on Monday and Friday's as well, and then in-between there will be other stuff that I like, pickup, get time to write about. I think getting a bit of structure to posts though is a good thing for the moment as it'll get me back into the habit, which has been lost for too long now.

So the first of the weekly regular posts, is, because it's wednesday, Wikipedia Wednesday.

Much like everyone, I look at a lot of Wikipedia pages on a weekly basis, they range extensively and really help in everything from just every day tasks, to understanding more about what I want out of my creativity, work, writing and sometimes life in general. Each Wednesday I'll share 3 to 5 wikipages I've looked at and why, and what they might help with, with the opening paragraph of the page.

- Knowledge acquisition - The concept of the acquisition of knowledge, and all the philosophical ramifications that come along with that, is something I've been a little obsessed with for some time now. I don't see that obsession dropping, the concept of Tabula Rasa is something that comes up time and again in many things that read about and read into, and appears in Concrete Operational as well. This wiki article isn't great, and doesn't really have many references, but it is a half decent spring board into loads of other really interesting stuff.

Opening: Knowledge acquisition is a method of learning, first proposed by Aristotle in his seminal work "Organon". Aristotle proposed that the mind at birth is a blank slate, or tabula rasa. As a blank slate it contains no knowledge of the objective, empirical universe, nor of itself.

- Special Warfare Insignia - After doing some reading up on the now politician, former WWF wrestler and general bad ass, Jesse 'The Body' Ventura, I found out he used to be part of the 'Underwater Demolition Team' which was later turned into the Navy SEALS. Basically, if you get to wear the Special Warfare Insignia, you're not the sort of person with whom to fuck.

Opening: The Special Warfare insignia, also known as the “SEAL Trident”, or its more popular nickname, "The Budweiser," is one of the most recognizable military badges of the United States Navy.

- Martin Heidegger - So, you know, in life and philosophy, there are some pretty grand questions, one of them is, what is it 'to be' or 'the question of being'. Martin, above, is a 20th Century German philosopher who explored this wrote many books on it, including one which is considered extremely important in philosophy of the 20th century. I need to read up more on this guy and his work in general, as with loads of other stuff, it's all very mind twisting, but really interesting.

Opening: Martin Heidegger (September 26, 1889 – May 26, 1976; was an influential German philosopher known for his existential and phenomenological explorations of the "question of being."His best-known book, Being and Time, is considered to be one of the most important philosophical works of the 20th century. Heidegger has been influential beyond philosophy, in literature, psychology, and artificial intelligence.

Enjoy.
